Name and Pronouns

My name is Brett P. Smiley, and my pronouns are he/him/his.

What did you want to be when you were a teenager?

I grew up with a strong interest in history, politics and government, but I didn’t always have a clear vision of my future path. Those interests eventually led me to student government during my high school and early college years. It wasn’t until later in life, during my third year in grad school in 2002- 2003, that I found my calling in politics. Through a fellowship opportunity, I delved deeper into political involvement and advocacy and volunteered on a friend’s council campaign, which ultimately sparked my passion for making a difference in the community.

What office do you hold and where do you hold it?

I have the honor of serving as the Mayor of the City of Providence, situated in the capital of the state of Rhode Island.

Why did you run for office?

The decision to run for office stemmed from my experiences working for elected officials at various levels of government. I saw firsthand the tangible impact that local governance has on people’s lives, which fueled my desire to run for office so that I could more meaningfully contribute to my community.

Why is it important for young people to be involved in politics?

Involvement in politics is crucial because policies are shaped by those who are actively engaged in the political process. Your voice matters and without representation, important perspectives may be overlooked in the decision-making processes. Being present at the table allows you to advocate for your interests and ensure that your community’s needs are considered.

What advice would you give a young LGTBQ+ person who wants to pursue a career in politics?

To young LGBTQ+ individuals aspiring to pursue a career in politics, I encourage you to seek out opportunities that provide substantial, impactful roles rather than settling for smaller roles in larger campaigns. Embrace opportunities for growth and mentorship, even if they come from individuals whose perspectives may differ from your own. Remember that your principles are essential, but there is always room for collaboration and influence.

Why, in your opinion, is it important to vote?

The importance of voting cannot be overstated. Voter participation is fundamental to the preservation of our democracy. By exercising your right to vote, you are shaping the future of our communities and our nation. Your vote is your voice, and it is essential to use it to ensure that all voices are heard and represented in our democratic process.

About the Series

In 2024, across the globe, more people are going to vote than ever before. It is vital that you stay informed, and that, when the time comes you vote. The Vote With Pride series aims to motivate people, especially young queer people, to take their life into their own hands this year by casting a ballot.
